In 1966, Daevid Allen returned from a trip to Majorca with Kevin Ayers intending to form The Soft Machine, a rock band financed by an eccentric millionaire they met on the island. After Allen emigrated to Paris in 1964, Wyatt and friends formed a rock band, The Wilde Flowers. Despite being six years older, Daevid got along well with Robert through a mutual love of jazz and similar iconoclastic spirits. The Wyatts took boarders the most significant was Australian Daevid Allen. He attended the Simon Langton Grammar School in Canterbury among his schoolmates were the Hopper brothers, Hugh and Brian, Michael Ratledge, and the Sinclair cousins, Richard and David.ĭuring the early 1960s, Hugh Hopper, the Sinclairs, and Wyatt, along with another school friend Kevin Ayers, spent their time at Wyatt's parents' mansion reading poetry, listening to jazz, and practicing music. Wyatt's childhood home was filled with music. One of pop music's most thought-provoking lyricists, he has developed his unique musical style without bowing to commercial pressures. Though I focus primarily on my biography of Wyatt, my reflections shed new light on the broader interconnections of celebrity and life writing, particularly in relation to the relatively neglected topic of authorised biography.Born Robert Wyatt Ellidge, January 28, 1945, in Bristol, England son of Honor Wyatt (a broadcaster and teacher) and George Ellidge (an industrial psychologist) married Pam Howard c. While authorised biography has been criticised as ‘autobiography in disguise’, I argue that there is in fact a clear distinction between authorised biography and ghostwritten autobiography, a distinction I frame with reference to the paratext and the autobiographical pact as well as the musical notion of polyphony. In this article, I critically reflect on the experience of writing Wyatt’s biography, focusing in particular on challenges and opportunities related to the book’s authorised status. Wyatt is not an archetypal celebrity in the terms outlined by celebrity theorists, in that the media continues to focus primarily on his public rather than private life yet he has certainly achieved cult status among popular music fans. Wyatt has performed on Top of the Pops and has appeared on several magazine covers. The British musician Robert Wyatt has released two top 40 hits and, in 1974s Rock Bottom, at least one album that features in the popular music canon.
